According to research, sheep farming is Ireland's second largest agriculture sector, with over 36,000 active flocks. This equates to 2.7 million breeding ewes. Ireland has a sheep population of 4 million, with an average flock size of 111 sheep. The average number of ewes per farm is 75.
Sheep farming is an important sector in Ireland providing value to our economy, we are the fourth largest exporter of sheep meat worldwide. Additionally sheep farming is carried out in some of the country’s most difficult land which largely contributes towards bio diversity and the environment.
