The changes will be implemented in two phases on 2 key dates, as listed below

From 1st October 2018                       Approved tag suppliers will be permitted to sell only electronic tags

Replacement of lost conventional tags will be facilitated

From 1st June 2019                             All sheep moving to or from any holding must be identified electronically.

New Rules

Under the new rules, from 1 October 2108 approved tag supplier will not be permitted to sell conventional tags (with the exception of replacement conventional tags lost from an EID set of tags)

From 1 June 2019 lambs aged under 12 months of age moving directly to a slaughter plant from the holding of their birth may be identified with a single electronic tag inserted into the animals right ear. All other sheep must be identified with a full electronic or bolus set of tags.

An EID set of tags consists of one electronic tag, which is inserted into the animal’s right ear, and a corresponding conventional tag bearing the same 15-digit individual identification number inserted into the animals left ear.

Single EID tags and EID tag sets wil be yellow in colour with the individual number printed in black

The sheep identification and movement rules that are currently in place will continue until 30th May 2019. You therefore should use the time between now and then to use up existing stock of tags. With effect from the 1st of June 2019 no sheep will be allowed to move from a holding unless they are tagged electronically. Single conventional tags will not be accepted after that date.

Tag Subsidy

There will be a once of payment of €100 per keeper to assist with the cost. This purchase will relate to your first purchase of electronic tags between the 1st of October 2018 and the 30th of September 2019.This works out at €1 per tag up to a maximum payment of €100.
