Agricultural consultant in Ireland

The Donegal Gold Dairy Discussion Group met on the farm of John Allen, Carrickbrack, just outside Convoy on Wednesday the 2ndNovember last. The group reviewed the trip to Omagh to the two Northern Ireland Focus Farms.  The group discussed the high grass covers that are present on the farm and the Deele Valley and Laggan area and what to do about them.  It was agreed to avoid poaching/tramping at all costs, if this meant taking on grazers then so be it.  Winter chores that deserve priority were next up with fluke and lice treatment top of the list.  Replacement heifer management is often overlooked at this time of year; aim to put 0.5kg per day of gain on weanling heifers to ensure they are at the target weight.  Targets are 320-340kg at bulling, 530-550kg at calving.  A 14% Protein meal is adequate for well grown heifers.  The group discussed the changeover of the Donegal Creameries milk division to the ownership of Connacht Gold and what it will mean for them.  The A+B – C system of paying for milk will suit some but not others.  The advantages and disadvantages of joining Connacht Gold and the fears of what may or may not happen were expressed.  The group then moved on to discuss bulk milk sampling for IBR to make an attempt at eradicating it from the herd.
